The Mural Man Phillip Martin will take you to Capetown; on a boat to Robben Island and see the prison where Nelson Mandela lived for almost 27 years; among penguins nesting on Cape Point; through the Drakensberg Mountains; and near whales off the coast of Hermanus.

Phillip Martin’s travels to South Africa also capture some of vanishing cultures at the Lesedi Village and a journey to Soweto’s poverty and opulence.

Each page is an adventure as you read recipes that are part of the culture of South Africa, such as Dahl (Lental Soup), or take the time to read “Puppy Love,” a wonderful Folk Tale that is filled with adventures and lessons learned.
Phillip’s stories are designed to encourage teachers and students to talk about the world and its beautifully diverse range of communities, food and customs. “I realized it is very possible to travel to a country and not meet one person who lives there. That all changed with my murals. They have opened doors into the personal lives and homes of local people who have so generously shared with me experiences that no tourist ever has the opportunity to enjoy.”
